LIFE LESSONS THAT FORGED STRENGTH AND DISCIPLINE

At the tender age of six years old, I watched my father suddenly die at the dinner table. One moment we’re talking, laughing and enjoying our dinner, and one massive heart attack later, he was gone.  As you can imagine, it was a traumatic, devastating event for all of us. No child should see their dad die in front of them.  Life after that became unmanageable for not only me but for us all.

My hero was gone, leaving me scared, angry, and suddenly directionless.

​It was a perfect storm that placed me on a path of trouble at home, in school, and with the law.  Most would have given up on me and chalked me up as one of the lost ones.  But not my oldest brother, Johnny, who was an amateur boxer at the Westbury Police Athletic League on Long Island. He did what no one else could do; he MADE me go to the gym and train with him.  It gave me a much-needed outlet—a physical outlet—where I could work out my anger, confusion, and frustration at life.  
It wasn’t long before I established a passion for Boxing. It became a safe place for me.  After I had joined the Police Athletic Club, I started training daily at the gym and learned some lifelong lessons.  Though I was too young to fully appreciate what was being forged in me at the time, nowadays I know those early years were preparing me to help others.

WHAT I'VE LEARNED

I learned training breeds confidence, confidence instills discipline, and discipline builds resilience. I discovered a similar truth: that struggle helps build deep reservoirs of strength; and that without some sense of meaning to our struggle, something inside of us begins to break down.  Finally, I came to realize our most important battles are over self-mastery.  Now I know that no matter what LIFE throws at you if you’ve developed the virtue of resilience, you accept problems are inevitable, but how you deal with them are optional.  

​Getting back to my story, later on, I Joined the Army and continued my Boxing training, and later became enthralled with Martial Arts as well.  I have been involved in boxing and martial arts now for over 40 years.  My life’s passion is to help everyday people—that means you—of ALL ages and genders improve their lives as it has improved mine.  I firmly believe that all of the wonderful benefits from training in boxing and martial arts start with the trainer and the environment. That’s important because the years have taught me a thing or two about human nature.

THE SIMPLE TRUTH

I can have all the knowledge in the world and the best system to teach, but if you don’t enjoy the training or not getting the results you want, then you won’t come back.  And well, we can’t have that, now can we?  I also know this: Training breeds confidence and confidence instill discipline.

My goal is to create a fun, challenging, positive training environment so that you can’t help but want to come back to again and again.

HOW I DO THIS:

2.  I challenge you physically and mentally
3.  I provide an environment that is genuinely FUN
4.  I create a training environment that is free from negative stress


If any of this resonates with you, then I believe I can safely assume that you are a lot like me in this sense:  You’d like the kind of inspiring coach who understands people fail to flourish for lack of noble work to do, and one of the noblest things you can do is master your body. In short, I know that you are a lot like me, so by creating the kind of training environment that I want to be in, I know that I’m also setting up the best environment for you to thrive in.  I’ve come to these conclusions about training from my experiences learning a variety of martial arts with a variety of world-class instructors over the past 40+ years.
